Transformation… Creative alchemy… The reinvention of an object…
In 1999 the renovation and transformation began the owner assembled his team and began to create his vision. Architect Tee Cowperthwaite opened up the ceiling to reveal the entire 35 foot height of the structure which allowed more light into the sanctuary as well as visually enhancing the sense of interior space. In order to maintain the aesthetic character of the space, the original ceiling beams were preserved by adding a foot of insulation and a new composition shingle roof over the original. Tom Sprung construction went to work restoring the exterior of the church by removing a layer of pink stucco which had been applied over the exterior brickwork, and cleaning and tuck pointing the original brick. The result is a beautiful, elaborate and original articulated brick façade with character and charm. New heating systems, a 410 amp lighting plan, new plumbing, new double hung windows, doors and walls were installed. A floating wood floor was installed over the original sanctuary floor, which had been raked at a 5 degree angle, in order to level the floor and provide a surface where artists could freely create! At this juncture, a restored exterior and a renovated interior was an empty palette awaiting the creative imagination of the artist.
Have it all…
This Live/Work space has been described as a “playhouse of expression,” a “wonderland,” “enchanting and inspiring.” It is space which lives happily between “not for everybody” and “not for anybody.” There is no doubt that strong creative energy and the soulful aura exuded by a great space are intrinsically present within the studio. One feels it as one opens the door. The fantasy begins in the foyer, where vaulted ceiling takes on the aura of a magical starry night. The ceiling is painted midnight blue and lit by fiber optics; the walls are papered in used maps of the world, an apt beginning to the creative journey beyond. The original sanctuary functions as working studio space, where the walls are on rollers for ultimate flexibility, the light abundant, and creativity happens! Gas radiant overhead heating was installed, as well as two swamp coolers to circulate air and cool down the space. There are electrical outlets every 6-8 feet and abundant flexible track lighting. A visitor can readily grasp the magic which is inherent in the artist’s work.
